Overview

About this service

Mechanically polished concrete is a multi-step diamond grinding and polishing process that transforms a raw or existing concrete slab into a refined, hard-wearing architectural floor. Unlike a topical coating, the finish is created from the slab itself — meaning it won't peel, flake or delaminate over time. The surface is densified with lithium silicate, progressively refined through diamond resin tooling, then sealed with a penetrating guard for long-term stain resistance.

At Ausgrind we polish residential floors, retail fit-outs, showrooms, cafés, hospitality venues, offices, warehouses and industrial slabs across Sydney. Every job starts with a free on-site assessment so we can match the finish — cream, salt-and-pepper or full aggregate exposure — and gloss level to your slab, your design intent and how the floor will be used. We then produce a fixed written quote covering every step from preparation to final burnish, so there are no surprises during the build.

Polished concrete is one of the most sustainable flooring choices available: no new materials are added, the slab is the finished surface, and ongoing maintenance is minimal. Done correctly, it will outlast tiles, timber and most coating systems by decades — making it a strong long-term value for owner-occupiers, landlords, builders and commercial fit-outs alike.

Because polished concrete is a mechanical finish rather than a coating, the look you get is unique to your slab. Every pour has its own aggregate distribution, colour and surface character, and the polishing process reveals that natural variation. We work closely with homeowners, architects, designers and builders across Sydney to dial in the exposure and gloss level that suits the room — from soft matte cream finishes in residential living areas through to full-exposure high-gloss showroom floors.

Maintenance is one of the major reasons clients choose polished concrete. A weekly sweep or vacuum, plus a damp mop with a neutral pH cleaner, is all most floors ever need. There's no grout to scrub, no timber to recoat, no carpet to replace. The penetrating guard sealer significantly improves stain and chemical resistance, and can be topped up every several years without disrupting the slab.

Polished concrete also performs exceptionally well underfoot in Sydney's climate. The slab acts as thermal mass — staying cool in summer and warm in winter — and it's fully compatible with hydronic underfloor heating systems. It's non-combustible, termite-proof, hypoallergenic, and contributes to better indoor air quality than carpet, vinyl or many coating systems.

Finish Options

Aggregate exposure levels

Polished concrete can be ground to four distinct exposure levels. Each reveals a different amount of the aggregate in your slab — from pure cement cream through to a full terrazzo-like statement floor.

Nil Exposure (Cream) polished concrete finish

Nil Exposure (Cream)

Pure cement paste finish — no aggregate visible. Soft, uniform appearance with a stone-like character. Ideal for minimalist interiors where the floor reads as a calm, monolithic surface.

Salt & Pepper polished concrete finish

Salt & Pepper

Light grind that exposes the fine sand and small stones near the surface. The most popular residential finish — visually interesting without dominating the room.

Medium Exposure polished concrete finish

Medium Exposure

Deeper grind revealing a balanced mix of fines and small aggregate. A great fit for cafés, showrooms and gyms where character and durability matter.

Full Aggregate Exposure polished concrete finish

Full Aggregate Exposure

Deepest grind — large stones are fully exposed, giving a terrazzo-like statement floor. Stunning in showrooms, hospitality venues and architectural homes.

Gloss Levels

Choose your sheen

Polished concrete can be finished from a soft matte through to a brilliant high-gloss showroom sheen. Higher gloss reflects more light and looks more premium; lower gloss hides marks and offers better slip resistance.

Matte

Soft, low-reflection finish that hides marks and footprints. Best for residential living areas and high-traffic homes.

Best slip rating

Satin

Subtle sheen with light reflection. A balanced everyday finish for homes, cafés and offices.

High slip resistance

Semi-Gloss

Noticeable shine that lifts a room and reflects natural light. Common in retail, showrooms and modern kitchens.

Moderate slip resistance

High-Gloss

Mirror-like reflection that maximises brightness. The signature showroom finish — striking, premium and easy to clean.

Lower slip resistance when wet

Our Process

How we deliver

  1. 01

    Initial site inspection

We attend site, measure the area, assess access and discuss the finish you want.

  2. 02

    Surface preparation

Existing coatings, glue, paint and contaminants are removed mechanically.

  3. 03

    Crack & hole repairs

Cracks are stitched with polyurea, voids and pop-outs filled with colour-matched repair products.

  4. 04

    Initial grinding

Aggressive metal-bond diamonds flatten the slab and remove the cream layer.

  5. 05

    Aggregate exposure

Further metal-bond passes expose the chosen level of aggregate — cream, salt-and-pepper or full.

  6. 06

    Densifier application

Lithium silicate densifier is applied to harden the slab and increase abrasion resistance.

  7. 07

    Grouting & refinement

Pinholes are grouted and the surface refined to remove micro-defects.

  8. 08

    Progressive diamond polishing

Resin-bond diamonds in progressively finer grits refine the surface to your target gloss.

  9. 09

    Stain guard sealer

Penetrating guard sealer is applied for stain protection and easier ongoing maintenance.

  10. 010

    Final burnish

High-speed burnishing delivers the final gloss and consistency.

  11. 011

    Final inspection

We walk the floor with you, confirm the finish and hand over maintenance guidance.

Is My Concrete Suitable?

Slab suitability guide

Almost every concrete slab in Sydney can be transformed — but the right approach depends on the slab's history and condition. Here's what we typically see:

New concrete
Ideal — wait for the slab to cure (typically 28 days) before polishing.
Old concrete
Almost always polishable. Achievable exposure depends on the slab condition.
Painted concrete
Paint is fully removed during the grinding stage at no extra cost in most cases.
Epoxy-coated floors
Existing epoxy is ground off mechanically before polishing — no chemicals required.
Glue residue (tile / carpet)
Tile beds and adhesive are removed during preparation. Standard inclusion.
Tile removal
We can lift tiles, remove the bed and polish the slab beneath as a single package.
Carpet removal
Carpet and underlay glue are removed during preparation.
Uneven concrete
Aggressive grinding flattens minor variations. Major levelling is quoted separately.
Cracks
Stitched with polyurea and filled with colour-matched compound prior to polishing.
Soft concrete
Densifier hardens the surface significantly — soft slabs are often better suited to grind & seal.
Water damage
Assessed case-by-case. Surface damage is often polishable; structural damage may need repair first.

Pricing

What it costs

Polished concrete pricing in Sydney depends on slab size, condition, level of aggregate exposure and gloss level required. As a guide, residential projects typically start from $90 per m² for a basic salt-and-pepper finish and range up to $160+ per m² for full-exposure high-gloss work. Commercial and industrial projects are quoted per project after a site visit. Final pricing is influenced by square metres, floor condition, number of rooms, corners and stairs, repairs required, aggregate exposure, desired gloss level, site access and concrete hardness. We provide a fixed written quote after our free on-site assessment so there are no surprises.

Final pricing depends on:

  • Total square metres
  • Floor condition and contaminants
  • Number of rooms and obstacles
  • Number of corners and edges
  • Stairs included in the area
  • Crack and surface repairs required
  • Aggregate exposure chosen
  • Desired gloss level
  • Site access and parking
