Overview

About this service

Concrete grinding is the mechanical process of refining a concrete slab using industrial diamond tooling rotating at high speed under heavy planetary grinders. The diamonds shear away the top layer of the slab — removing contaminants, smoothing high spots and creating a controlled surface profile (CSP) that the next finish can bond to. It is the foundation of every successful flooring system, from epoxy and polyurethane coatings through to vinyl, hybrid, tile, timber, carpet and full mechanically polished concrete.

Sydney slabs see everything from carpet glue and vinyl adhesive through to thick failed epoxy, paint, line markings, waterproof membranes, sand-cement screeds and self-levelling compounds. Grinding removes them all mechanically — no harsh chemicals, no toxic residues, no waiting for solvents to flash off. The slab is left clean, sound and ready for the next trade, often the same day.

Grinding is not the same as polishing, scarifying or shot blasting. Polishing is the multi-step diamond refinement that produces a glossy architectural floor. Scarifying uses tungsten cutters to aggressively profile rough industrial slabs and leaves deep tracking. Shot blasting fires steel pellets to texture a slab for heavy coatings. Grinding sits between the two — fast and aggressive enough to remove coatings and level slabs, refined enough to leave a clean substrate suitable for almost any finish.

Ausgrind grinds residential garages, driveways, alfresco areas and renovation slabs; commercial retail, office, hospitality and gym fit-outs; and industrial warehouses, factories, workshops and distribution centres across greater Sydney. Every job is dust-controlled with HEPA vacuum extraction at the source so the process is safe for live-in homes, occupied tenancies and shared construction sites.

Almost every concrete surface can be ground — new slabs, old slabs, painted slabs, epoxy-coated floors, glue-contaminated screeds, balcony membranes and uneven driveways. The right approach depends on the contaminant, the slab hardness and the finish that's going on top. After a free on-site assessment we recommend the diamond tooling, grit progression and surface profile that suits the project.

The result of professional concrete grinding is a flat, clean, properly profiled slab — the single biggest factor in whether the floor that goes down next lasts five years or fifty. Get the preparation right and every finish, from a $40/m² sealer through to a $200/m² polished floor, performs better and lasts longer.

Grinding Services

What we grind

From surface preparation for new coatings through to thick epoxy, membrane and screed removal — Ausgrind covers the full range of concrete grinding applications across Sydney.

Surface preparation

Preparing concrete for epoxy, polyurethane, vinyl, hybrid, carpet, timber and tile. The correct CSP (concrete surface profile) is the single biggest factor in whether the coating that follows lasts five years or fifty.

Glue removal

Mechanical removal of carpet glue, vinyl adhesive, tile glue, black mastic and pressure-sensitive adhesives. Faster and cleaner than chemical stripping, with no residue left to interfere with the next finish.

Epoxy removal

Thick epoxy coatings, flaking systems, failed industrial floors and metallic / flake epoxy — all removed with diamond grinding and HEPA extraction. Slab is left profiled and ready for re-coating.

Paint removal

Acrylic coatings, floor paints, industrial paints and line markings ground off cleanly without chemical solvents.

Waterproof membrane removal

Internal membranes, external membranes and balcony membranes removed mechanically, with the slab re-prepared for the next membrane, tile bed or coating.

Cement screed removal

Sand-cement screeds, self-levelling compounds, failed screeds and bonded screeds ground back to the structural slab.

Trip-hazard removal

Uneven concrete, lifted pavers and raised joints ground flat for council compliance and safety — gentle taper rather than a hard step.

High-spot removal

Slab corrections, floor flattening and tolerance correction for tiling, vinyl and hybrid flooring installations.

Concrete floor levelling

Removing high spots and creating a level slab as the foundation for new flooring.

Equipment

Industry-leading machines

Premium equipment makes a measurable difference to flatness, edge work and dust control. Ausgrind runs professional planetary grinders from HTC and Husqvarna, all paired with HEPA dust extraction at the source.

HTC grinders

Heavy planetary grinders renowned for flat, even results across large commercial and industrial slabs.

Husqvarna grinders

Versatile planetary grinders ideal for residential, commercial and tighter access areas.

Industrial dust extractors

High-capacity HEPA-filtered vacuums captured at the source so dust never escapes into the room.

Hand and edge grinders

Dedicated edge units take the surface tight to skirtings, walls and around penetrations.

HEPA filtration systems

True HEPA filtration captures 99.97% of particles down to 0.3 microns — safe for occupied buildings.

Why Mechanical Grinding

Grinding vs the alternatives

Mechanical diamond grinding is the only method that produces a controlled, repeatable concrete surface profile suitable for the full range of modern coatings and finishes.

vs Chemical stripping

Mechanical grinding leaves no chemical residue, doesn't soften the slab and removes coatings completely. Chemical strippers rarely fully remove modern industrial coatings and still need grinding afterwards.

vs Acid etching

Acid etching is inconsistent, raises slab moisture, can flash-rust rebar and produces a profile that often fails coating manufacturer specifications. Grinding produces a controlled, repeatable CSP every time.

vs Scarifying

Scarifiers use tungsten cutters and leave deep, aggressive tracking — too rough for most modern coatings. Grinding produces a finer, more controlled profile suitable for the full range of finishes.

vs Sanding

Sanding lacks the power and tooling to remove industrial coatings, glue or screed. Diamond grinding cuts through anything bonded to a slab quickly and cleanly.

Our Process

How we deliver

  1. 01

    Site inspection

On-site survey of slab condition, contaminants, access, power and dust-control requirements. Free, no-obligation.

  2. 02

    Floor assessment

Slab hardness, contaminant depth and existing finish are tested to confirm the correct grinder and tooling.

  3. 03

    Diamond tooling selection

Metal-bond diamonds in the correct grit and bond hardness are matched to the slab and contaminant.

  4. 04

    Mechanical grinding

Planetary grinders pass over the slab in overlapping passes until the contaminant is removed or the profile achieved.

  5. 05

    HEPA dust extraction

Industrial HEPA vacuums are connected at the source so dust is captured before it escapes.

  6. 06

    Edge grinding

Dedicated edge grinders take the surface tight to skirtings, walls and around penetrations.

  7. 07

    Final inspection

Profile and cleanliness are checked across the slab and any missed areas reworked.

  8. 08

    Surface cleaning

Slab is vacuumed and wiped down so it is ready for the next trade or coating system.

  9. 09

    Ready for next trade

Floor is handed over clean, profiled and ready for the coating, polish or covering to begin.
